DNS – Domain Name System

« Back to Glossary Index

What Are Domain Name Servers, AKA DNS Servers?

The domain name system is like the internet’s phone book.

When a user types in a domain name, their computer contacts the international system of domain name servers which tells the computer where to go to retrieve the files to be able to view your website.

Complete website maintenance & management requires that you have control over the DNS for your domain name.

  • Do you know where your DNS is managed? This can be in a different place from your domain registration or website hosting.
  • Do you have the login information?

Often additions and edits are required to your DNS records, also known as zone files. Services like email, and analytics will often require you to make updates to your DNS records.
