How to Add a User to Your Google Cloud Project: A Quick Video Tutorial by SangFroid Web
Sometimes, you need a web developer, webmaster, or website consultant to help you set up things like the Google Maps API for embedding custom maps on your website or to tweak project settings in your Google Cloud account. To do that, they’ll often ask you to add them as a user to your Google Cloud project in Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
Why would my web developer need access to my Google Cloud project?
Certain WordPress plugins or custom website functionalities might leverage Google Cloud APIs (e.g., Google Maps API, Google Analytics API, Google Vision API). Access to the GCP project is necessary to enable these APIs, generate API keys, and manage their usage.
Why shouldn’t I just share my own Google login to give someone access?
Sharing your own Google credentials is risky because Google uses a single sign-on system — meaning one login gives access to all your connected Google services, not just the Cloud project you need help with. By adding a new user to the project instead, you keep your credentials private and only grant them the exact level of access they need for that specific Google Cloud project. This protects your other Google accounts and keeps your project secure.
Here’s exactly how to add users to Google Cloud projects — step by step. This simple guide shows you how to grant access securely so your team or web developer can help manage APIs and settings. You can also watch the video to see the step by step instructions.
1. Open the Google Cloud Console
Go to console.cloud.google.com.
You can also just search “Google Cloud Console” on Google — the first result should take you there.
2. Make Sure You’re Using the Correct Google Account
A common mistake is being logged in with the wrong Google account.
Check the account icon in the top right of your browser — make sure it matches the account you used to create the project.
If needed, switch to the correct profile.
3. Select the Project
Once you’re in the Cloud Console:
Click the project name at the top.
A list of your projects will appear — choose the project you want to share access to.
4. Open the IAM Settings
Click the three dots next to your project name.
Select Project Settings.
Click the IAM button (IAM stands for Identity and Access Management).
Here you’ll see a list of users who already have access.
5. Grant Access to a New User
Click the Grant Access button.
Enter the email address of the person you want to add (for example, your developer’s work email).
Under Select a Role, choose Basic > Editor. Tip: The Editor role gives them enough access to handle technical tasks but does not make them an owner.
Click Save.
6. Confirm Access
You should now see the new user listed.
When they log in to their own Google Cloud Console, they’ll see the project under their Projects menu. They can now get the settings or API keys they need to help you.
